Education
Mutono is a data scientist combining applied epidemiological modelling and data analytics in developing prevention and control strategies for infectious diseases in Africa. She is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis (CEMA) at the University of Nairobi. Her research at CEMA is on control and elimination of neglected tropical diseases. Previously, she has researched on understanding the transmission dynamics and control of SARS-CoV-2 and rabies in Kenya, employing mathematical modelling techniques. She holds an Msc in Data Analytics from the University of Glasgow, a Msc in Environment Governance from the University of Nairobi, and did her PhD thesis on the nexus between piped water distribution and waterborne diseases in Nairobi, a rapidly urbanising city. Mutono earned her MSc in Environment Governance degree in 2016 from the University of Nairobi. In addition, she is a research fellow at the University of Nairobi Centre for Epidemiological Modelling and Analysis, and a member of the Kenya National COVID-19 Modelling Technical Committee.
Research
Mutono’s research interest is in the use of quantitative skills in epidemiology, including statistics and mathematics, to control for infectious diseases. Her research investigates the spatial and temporal patterns of water distribution in Nairobi and how it is associated with morbidity of waterborne diseases in the same region. As such, the results of her research will improve the quality and speed of decision-making in public health through the use of data in the control and prevention of waterborne diseases and in supporting programs geared towards equitable access to public health amenities in Kenya and the African continent at large.
