Research Summary
Poultry farming in the Ivory Coast has become an important trade and contributes greatly to the country’s economy however it generates a significant amount of waste. Some of the poultry slaughterhouse waste is turned into manure for agriculture, but a lot is dumped in public landfills. The accumulation of this waste can be a source of soil and water pollution by pathogenic bacteria resistant to antibiotics. In addition to the risk of modifying the biodiversity of the microbial flora of soil and water, these antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be transmitted to humans and lead to failure in the treatment of certain pathologies. Chemical methods of waste recovery could lead to the production of other environmentally harmful compounds. In contrast, using microbial enzymes in degradation of this waste is found to be environmentally friendly, energy efficient and the protein yields are of high quality. Aiza’s research contributes to the management of such waste through establishing a simple and inexpensive biotransformation process as well as cleaning up the environment through the reduction of the quantity of waste dumped and introduction of a natural and ecological transformation process of the waste.
