Linnet Wanjiru Mwangi holds a Master’s degree in Food Science from Egerton University, Kenya, where she is also currently pursuing a PhD. While at Egerton University, Linnet has been a part-time assistant lecturer at the Department of Dairy and Food Science, a research assistant, and an administrative assistant with the RELOAD project (Reducing Losses Adding Value) in the dairy value chain. She is also a part-time research assistant in a project titled “Increased stakeholder participation in enhancing food safety in the Camel milk value chain”, based in Northern Kenya, where camel milk is a popular dietary choice. This initiative is part of the Kenya Climate-Smart Agriculture Project, supported by the Government of Kenya and the World Bank.
Research & Work
Linnet’s career aspiration is to contribute to food and income security, good health, and the wellbeing of farmers and other value chain actors within Africa. She is currently a One Health Research Fellow at the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi, Kenya. Her research, titled “Diversity of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis and Mycobacterium Bovis strains and their antimicrobial resistance in camel milk”, addresses food safety through the analysis of mycobacteria in camel milk. Through her research, Linnet will help inform strategies, interventions and policies for the control of zoonotic tuberculosis, which is transmitted from sick camels to consumers through the consumption of unpasteurized milk and products, and contribute to the wellbeing of pastoral women and infants who depend on camel milk for nutrition.
