Lilian Namuma S. Kong’ani has earned a Ph.D. in Environmental Governance and Management at the University of Nairobi, Kenya. She is a Tutorial Fellow at the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies, holds an MSc. in Environmental Governance, from the University of Nairobi, and a BSc. in Environmental Studies (Community Development) from Kenyatta University. Lilian has had her research published in peer-reviewed journals and participated in several local and international conferences, including the 2019 International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability (ISCE) at Tongji University and UN Environment, organized by UN Environment -Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development (IESD), in Shanghai, China. Lilian previously worked as an Intern at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees and is a certified International Standards Organization (ISO) Auditor at the University of Nairobi. She also serves on numerous committees on complaints handling, webometrics, solid waste management, ISO technical and work study programme.

Research & Work

Lilian’s research on the ‘Role of Mediation in Resolving Project Implementation Conflicts for Sustainable Development, Case of Olkaria IV Geothermal Project, Kenya,’ will inform policies on upscaling the use of mediation in resolving developmental conflicts. Her research will also contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), especially SDG16 and the Africa Agenda Goal 13, which aim to achieve peace, justice and strong governance institutions. In her work, Lilian also participated in the coordination of the “Stabilizing Kenya through Resolving Forest Related Conflicts” project and served as an assistant on the “Promoting the Critical Role of Women in Climate Change (wPOWER) Hub initiative, which aimed at building the evidence base on women, energy access and climate solutions.
