Education
Desta Mulu is a PhD candidate at Kaimosi Friends University College in Kenya. She completed her BSc and MSc degree in Agroforestry at Hawassa University in Ethiopia, where Desta also served as a lecturer and researcher from 2014 to 2017. Since 2017, She has been at Injibara University as a lecturer and researcher related to Climate-smart Agroforestry. Desta is also a recipient of the BioInnovate Africa Fellowship for Women Scientists, which provides opportunities for early and mid-career women scientists to work with and learn from the diverse BioInnovate Africa bio economy projects and networks in the region. During her fellowship, Desta was placed at Maseno University in Kenya where she received training on Solid Waste Management.
Research & Work
Desta’s research interest is in Bioenergy, specifically bioethanol gel fuel and briquettes, solid waste management, and climate-smart Agroforestry. Her PhD research, ‘Optimization of bioethanol gel fuel, briquette fuel and biofertilizer production from selected agricultural wastes and water hyacinth in Ethiopia and Kenya,’ will provide innovative research-based evidence to policymakers on the use of solid wastes for clean energy, and biofertilizer to reduce environmental pollution, enhancing the economic benefits to communities. Desta hopes that her research will also provide low-cost fuel options for less economically advantaged groups, including women.
