Course Description

As researchers, your relationship with the research community, and the relationship of the research community to society-at-large depends on you observing basic ethical, institutional, and legal norms to protect the trustworthiness of your results and publications, the health of your professional relationships, and the dignity and rights of your research participants.

While recognising that some of these norms may differ by geography, field, or the object of research, this MLEx MicroCourse seeks to introduce fundamental principles of ethics in research that are relevant across a wide range of disciplines. We also seek to provide a basic guide to the ethics approvals and permits researchers must secure before conducting research in different parts of the African continent (to be updated regularly over the course of the Fellowship period).

This course is comprised of the following components:

  1. A live Webinar/Event scheduled and communicated to enrolled Fellows where there will be a research expert or Professor to take Fellows through two hours of discussion on ethics in research
  2. Resources in the form of PDFs and in some cases, videos that enrolled Fellows can refer to from time to time, on a variety of subjects, including but not limited to Research Dos and Don’ts, Working with Human “subjects”, Standards for Research Ethics {across Africa} (to be updated over the course of the Fellowship period).
