Research Summary
In Nigeria, poor and late diagnosis of urothelial bladder cancer prevents early intervention. This is because available diagnostic tools are sophisticated and mostly invasive, necessitating visits to modern healthcare facilities with technical experts. These healthcare facilities are, however, inaccessible to primary endemic remote rural communities. This need has inspired questions regarding mechanisms by which the UGS causative parasite, S.haematobium contributes to the development of bladder cancer. While early infection can be quickly remedied, mature Schistosomiasis Associated Bladder Pathology (SABC) is mostly irremediable. Investigating the molecular determinants of  UGS progression and early SABC tumorigenesis (prior to malignancy) is important in developing early non-invasive diagnostic tools for the disease and reducing morbidity in UGS endemic settings globally.
