Education

Renee Rosebella Munayi is a post-graduate student at the University of Nairobi in Kenya where she is pursuing a PhD in Philosophy of Chemistry. Renee is also a part-time lecturer at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) and the Multimedia University of Kenya. She specialises in Industrial Chemistry and seeks to bring modern industrialization to her home country Kenya, through her students. She completed her first degree, a Bsc. in Industrial Chemistry, at Kenyatta University, and for her MSc. she studied Industrial Chemistry at the University of Nairobi.

Research and Work

Renee is passionate about enhancing development in the community, as well as promoting environmental safety through the use of Chemistry. Her PhD research project, entitled ‘Development of Geopolymer concrete reinforced with multiwalled carbon nanotubes’ aims to investigate an eco-friendly cement, known as geopolymer, that is both environmentally friendly and economical, helping to reduce the cost of construction. The geopolymer Renee is developing, uses waste from the rice industry as its raw material, as well as locally available clay. From this research, Renee hopes to create an alternative form of cement that will lower construction costs in the country with the locally available raw materials. As a result, she also aims to reduce environmental pollution and the effects of global warming that are a side effect of limestone mining.  Renee hopes to impart the research and conservation skills she is gaining to her students, increasing their ability to create sustainable change in their communities.
