Examining how habitat conditions affect malaria vectors

University

Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology

Area of Focus

Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics

Education

Pauline Orondo is attached at the Department of Biochemistry at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kenya; pursuing her PhD in  Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. Pauline is an entomologist by training, with a specialization in Molecular Biology. She has experience in Malaria Vector Ecology and Insecticide Resistance and has worked as a research assistant in the Entomology Laboratories at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in Nairobi, Kilifi, and Malindi.

Research & Work

Pauline’s research work focuses on Malaria Vector Ecology and Insecticide Resistance in western Kenya. Through her research, Pauling will improve understanding of how the biotic (micro-organisms and aquatic vegetation) and abiotic (shade cover, distance from the nearest house, soil type, etc) factors in habitats affect malaria vector development and survival. Pauline’s research will also provide information on the suitable conditions supporting vector breeding, which can be used to inform vector control through larval source management, a technique that can be incorporated in vector control in addition to the chemically impregnated nets. This study will provide additional information on how to control immature mosquitoes before they emerge from their breeding places.
