Education

Joanne Adero is a PhD student at Makerere University, where, in 2016, she also received her MSc in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. Joanne joined the National Crops Resources Research Institute (NaCRRI) of Uganda as an MSc student in 2012, where she leads sweet potato plant virology and molecular biology research activities. At NaCRRI, Joanne also works with breeders to improve breeding strategies for the sweet potato.

Research & Work

For the past seven years, Joanne has been actively involved in Plant virology and Tissue Culture of root crops, such as cassava and sweet potato, and has undertaken several trainings to build her capacity in various molecular techniques including tissue culture, nucleic acid extractions, virus indexing and bioinformatics among others. Joanne’s research, titled ‘Identification of Genomic regions associated with Sweet potato virus disease resistance’, is a study aimed at generating information that will contribute to the increased understanding of the sweet potato genome and identifying genetic markers for SPVD resistance that can be utilized to accelerate the development of SPVD resistant varieties for the resource poor communities that highly depend on the crop for food, nutrition and income security.
