Education

Chirikona Flora Nyangweso is a PhD student at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST), pursuing Environmental Chemistry. She also teaches Mathematics and Chemistry at Cardinal Otunga Girls in Bungoma, Kenya. Chirikona holds an MSc in Chemistry and a B.Ed in Science from MMUST. She is also a part-time Tutorial Fellow in the Department of Science Engineering and Technology at Kibabii University in Bungoma. Besides teaching, Chirikona mentors youth to become responsible citizens.

Research & Work

Chirikona’s research entails determining the level of Perfluoroalkyl acids, which are toxic, bioaccumulative, and carcinogenic, persistent organic pollutants, in surface water. Once the levels of these pollutants are ascertained, she proposes to initiate a process of removing them from drinking water by developing an effective point of use method that is cheap and readily acceptable, using locally available materials. The data obtained on the levels of Perfluoroalkyl acids in the surface water, will also form a basis for the government of Kenya to implement disposal regulations for these pollutants, ensuring the safety of drinking water. Chirikona also hopes to commercialize the water filters for the purpose of water purification.
