Education
Nakiguli Fatumah holds a BSc in Community Forestry from Makerere University in Uganda, and a MSc in Climate and Society from Mekelle University, Ethiopia. She entered the world of academia to explore her passion for environmental sciences and food systems research. She is currently pursuing her doctoral research focused on developing novel protocols for recycling bio-waste into highly nutritious feeds, in order to improve livestock, poultry, and fish farming systems in East Africa.
Research & Work
For over five years, Nakiguli Fatumah has been a noteworthy leader in climate change, biodiversity and food systems. She has been published at the Agriculture Environment and Livelihood (AGRILIV) and Makerere University, and is also credited with research contributions to food security, climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation, and ecosystems management. Nakiguli was honoured with the Female Conservationist Award from the Rufford Foundation in 2017, for her outstanding research on fungi ecology and biodiversity. Her research will help develop novel protocols for recycling wastes into algae-based feed resources which can be used to cultivate microalgae. The cultivated microalgae can then be used to produce low-cost, and better nutritional, feeds for livestock, poultry, and fisheries as compared to conventional inputs such as silverfish, maize brand, and other cereal-based feeds. Nakiguli’s novel bio-feeds will help boost livestock, poultry and fish farming, thereby contributing to increased food production and security.
