Education
Emily Ngeno is a PhD student at Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) pursuing Environmental and Physical Chemistry. Emily is also a part-time tutorial fellow in the Department of Chemistry at MMUST, where she also earned her MSc in Chemistry with a focus on pharmaceuticals in the environment. She has a B.Ed from Kenyatta University and previously worked as a Chemistry and Mathematics teacher in Eor Ekule Secondary in Narok, Kenya.
Research & Work
Emily is deeply passionate about the environment. Her research involves determining the concentration levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in water sources, which can cause/result in adverse health effects including neurological disorders, behavioural disorders, reproductive health disorders, tumors and birth defects. Once the presence of these chemicals is ascertained, Emily’s research will initiate a process of removing these pollutants from water systems by using locally available plants, such as Moringa oleifera (commonly known as drumstick tree) and Eicchornia crassipes (commonly known as water hyacinth), using a process of adsorption and phytoremediation respectively. Because of the paucity of data in Kenya regarding the concentration levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals in the environment, Emily’s research will not only bridge this information gap, but will also investigate the potential of using Moringa Oleifera seed biomass and Eicchornia Crassipes in the removal of these pollutants from aqueous solutions.
