Research Summary
Sharon’s research addresses critical gaps in the management and implementation of learnership programs within South Africa’s hospitality industry. Despite high unemployment and skills shortages, there is limited academic focus on the specific challenges faced by this sector in relation to learnerships. Existing frameworks, such as those from the National Skills Development Strategy (NSDS III), are not tailored to the hospitality context, which hampers effective implementation and management. This study proposes an integrated learnership model for the hospitality industry, aiming to improve the quality of training and enhance graduates’ employability. By testing established models and developing a framework specific to the hospitality sector, the research fills a significant gap and has the potential to boost economic growth and workforce readiness in South Africa.
