Health and Life Sciences

Education
Kidist holds a Master’s degree in Applied Microbiology from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Applied Microbiology at Hawassa University, Ethiopia, and has completed her coursework and successfully defended her research proposal. Kidist is expected to defend her dissertation in January 2026, with graduation in June 2026.

Research Summary
Kidist’s research tackles the growing issue of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria in poultry in Southern Ethiopia, which significantly contributes to foodborne illnesses and the spread of antibiotic resistance. The study focuses on identifying MDR bacterial strains, such as Salmonella and Campylobacter, and evaluating their sensitivity to various herbal extracts as alternative antimicrobial agents. By employing molecular techniques, including PCR and whole-genome sequencing, Kidist aims to characterize the genetic basis of antibiotic resistance in these pathogens. Additionally, the efficacy of herbal extracts will be assessed, with the potential to discover novel therapeutic solutions. This research addresses critical gaps in the understanding of MDR pathogens and provides insights into the development of alternative treatments, contributing to improved food safety and public health.
