Education
Jessie’s PhD thesis is in Environmental and Water Science. She holds an MSc in Environmental and Water Science from the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. Currently a research assistant at the University of the Western Cape, Jessie is in her second year of PhD studies, with an expected completion date of December 2026.
Research Summary
Jessie’s research addresses the contamination of water systems by micropollutants, such as pesticides and pharmaceuticals, in South Africa’s Western Cape coastal areas. These contaminants, stemming from agricultural activities and wastewater effluents, pose significant risks to both aquatic ecosystems and human health. Through field sampling across various environmental compartments and advanced laboratory analysis, the study investigates the transport and distribution of micropollutants along the land-to-sea continuum. By identifying contamination hotspots and evaluating existing regulatory frameworks, this research aims to provide critical insights for policymakers and environmental managers. The findings will contribute to sustainable pollution management strategies, ultimately supporting both environmental conservation and public health in the region.
