“Genetic mapping of root-knot nematode resistance genes in eggplant cultivars for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture in Côte d’Ivoire

Country of Study
Uganda

Institution
Makerere University

Expected Year of Completion
2027

Thematic Area
Agriculture

Education
Catherine’s PhD thesis is in Plant Breeding and Biotechnology. She holds an MSc in Crop Science from Makerere University’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in Uganda. Currently pursuing her PhD at Makerere University in Kampala, she is in her second year of studies and is expected to complete her doctorate in 2027.

Research Summary
Catherine’s research tackles the significant challenge of early blight disease (EBD) in tomato farming in Uganda, caused by Alternaria species, which leads to yield losses and increased fungicide use. The study addresses key gaps in understanding the pathogen’s genetic variability across Uganda, which complicates disease management and breeding efforts for resistance. By combining pathogen characterization, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and genomic selection models, the research aims to identify genomic regions linked to EBD resistance in tomatoes. This will enable the development of genetic markers for marker-assisted selection (MAS) in breeding programs, accelerating the creation of resistant tomato varieties. The study will reduce reliance on chemical fungicides, promote sustainable agricultural practices, and improve food security by equipping farmers with disease-resistant crops. Catherine’s work aims to enhance agricultural resilience and food security, not only in Uganda but also in regions facing similar challenges with early blight disease.
